Pesach, also known as Passover, is one of the most important festivals in Judaism. It commemorates the Exodus from Egypt, marking the liberation of the Israelites from slavery. The festival is celebrated for a week, from the 15th to the 22nd of Nisan in the Jewish calendar, and it includes the Seder meal on the first night, which is rich in symbolism and tradition.
During Pesach, it is customary to eat Matzah, unleavened bread, to remember the haste with which the Israelites left Egypt, not having time to let their bread rise. The holiday also involves the reading of the Haggadah, a text that narrates the story of the Exodus, and encourages participation and questioning, especially by the children, to ensure the transmission of the story to each generation.
The name “Pesach” comes from the Hebrew word meaning “to pass over” or “to spare,” referring to the biblical story where God passed over the houses of the Israelites during the tenth plague on Egypt, sparing their firstborns. This event is central to the holiday’s themes of freedom, redemption, and gratitude.
